Sub: Sir, Many thanks, but the situation in the river bed is still to look up - Good, bad and ugly in the river bed of river Yamuna in Delhi

Respected Sir,

Greetings from Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan.

Sir, this communication is in continuation of our earlier submissions made in the matter of encroachment and dumping of solid waste in the river bed in the city.

Sir, while we appreciate some of the executive actions (tree plantation in the river bed; public notice on MCD dumping sites; raising of boundary wall; sign boards; police post etc) taken following the Hon'ble NGT's and your honour's directions and the initiative of the Hon'ble Chief Secretary of NCTD and the effective supervision of the Nodal Officer for water bodies in the NCTD, towards safeguarding the river bed / flood plains in the river Yamuna in the city, we solicit to your kind attention to the (enclosed) survey report from 12 Aug 2012, that points to Good, Bad and Ugly situations still persisting in the river bed.

We note in particular the successful plantation of suitable species carried out by the FD of NCTD even prior to the NGT directive and find such actions to be worthy of replication, perhaps all over the remaining flood plain (especially the area currently held by the DMRC in Shastri Park area) in the city.

But we regretfully note that many sites (S.No. 79,80,128, 129, 131 etc) indicated by the MCD in its Public Notice (Department of Environment) (copy enclosed) are actually either existing water bodies or are low lying areas, which is we believe improper and undesirable for dumping of solid waste as it amounts to only shifting the problem from one site to another. Also the ongoing illegal (presumed) construction in the river bed at Majnu Ka Tila (picture 14)  is a matter of great concern.

We hope that your honour would direct necessary corrective measures in the matter.

With warm regards,

Manoj Misra
Convener
